Matses Women

Matses women wearing traditional facial paint and ornamentation.  Traditionally, the Matsés tribe women insert ornaments in their noses that imitate the appearance of cat whiskers, hence their being commonly referred to as the "Cat People."  The straw-colored “whiskers” are made out of the midribs of palm leaves.  One woman pierces another woman's nose in order to insert the nose ornaments.  After a death in the family, a woman will not wear the ornaments during the mourning period.
