The stick inserted in the lower lip is made from the caña brava plant
(Gynerium
sagitatum)
and referred to as a "lip stick." Traditionally, younger women used
longer sticks, while older women used shorter sticks. The purpose of
ornamental piercings is decorative rather than religious.
