Female body painting of a Matsés woman. Like many Amazonian tribes, the
Matses use a red dye obtained from the annatto plant
(Bixa orellana)
to paint their face and bodies. Women typically paint another woman's body.
Indigenous Amazonians have a different perspective of their bodies and do
not share western taboos of appearing unclothed in public. Like most
indigenous people of the Amazon, Matses women did not wear clothes until
after making contact with western societies. |
