One unique characteristic of Matses woman is that they commonly participate
in hunting activities unlike most neighboring Amazonian tribes. During the
hunt, woman will help spot game, take part in the chase, retrieve arrows,
kill animals with machetes or sticks, and carry the game back to camp.
Incredibly, the woman will often accompany the men carrying an infant child.
With few exceptions (e.g.
the Matis tribe), this intimate involvement of women in the hunt is unheard
of among Amazonian tribes. The image of women hunting invokes an image
of Amazon women in the sense of the Greek myth of Amazon women warriors.
