Matses native men live in a society that is very “macho” in that their
practices and rituals often involve enduring pain. That said, there are very few
examples of one Matses native man killing another and disputes between men are
usually settled in formal wrestling matches followed by spatial separation
rather than with violence. Perhaps not surprisingly, the most common cause of
conflict between native men is women. Conversely, Matses men are not unusually
jealous and spouse sharing is relatively common. However, one must bear in mind
that the Matses are polygamous with one native man commonly having multiple
wives.
