Until recently, the Matsés were renowned for abducting women from other
tribes. Traditionally, the Matsés would integrate women from other tribes (and
even Brazilian and Peruvian women) into Matsés society. At present,
approximately twenty percent of the Matses women originated from other tribes
having been forcibly abducted. Although many women were abducted, the
Matses men still treat women with respect and even have special ceremonies that
punish those men that mistreat women, captive or not. Interestingly, some
of the other tribes that they came from no longer exist, with the last speakers
of their language presently living with the Matses.
