The Matses are without a doubt, some of the best practitioners of the art of archery in
the entire Amazon Rainforest. However, anthropologists have documented that
until relatively recent in Matses history, the Matses used blowguns rather
than bows and arrows. It was only the need to defend their territory from
foreign invaders that caused the Matses to give up blowguns in favor of
archery. In fact, some have suggested that the Matses adapted Amazonian
archery technology from the Marubo tribe. What ever the origin, Matses bows
and arrows are a reflection of the strong Matses work ethic in that they are
meticulousness crafted instruments demanding an incredible amount of energy
and time in their production.
